MERIDIAN ISLAND
A distinctly different island, a paradise with a soul…
The island of El Hierro is the youngest, smallest, western and southern island of the Canaries. It has been declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCOin the year 2000, and Geopark in 2014. On this island live just under 10,000 inhabitants, and it is therefore the least populated of the Canary Islands.
The island of El Hierro is also nicknamed I'"meridian island", because for centuries it was considered the westernmost point in the known world.
It was the astronomer and astrologer Ptolemy who located the zero meridian at Punta de Orchilla, before it was transferred to Greenwich, its current location.
The island of El Hierro is made up of cliffs of rocky and very steep coasts, among which there are many basins and natural pools.
The black volcanic earth that covers it accentuates this feeling of distant and mysterious land, far from civilization, that the island gave until the discovery of America.
This geographical location, this orography and this low population density, make the island of El Hierro a magical place. For an exceptional trip, ideal for finding yourself.
A place that contains the best of the past and the future. An island that has become the symbol of sustainable development, which is supplied with 100% renewable energy.
